(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 02, 2013 ) England, UK -- Luxury cars are more likely to be involved in an accident insurance claim than other vehicles, according to the latest from the NRMA.

Figures have been compiled by the NRMA Insurance that express that luxury sedans had a higher collision frequency of nearly 129% compared to all other vehicle types. Luxury SUVs had a 27% higher collision frequency as well.

Commercial vans followed in third on the list with a 15% higher frequency of accidents, while utes and trucks were the least likely to be involved in accidents. The vehicles scored a -27% and -37% respectively.

The research was conducted for a 12 month period ending in March, and was based on the collision-exposure average of all vehicles manufactured between 2003 and 2013.

NRMA's head of research, Robert McDonald, stated that the findings boiled down to simple driver behavior and attitude. He did not that there is something to be said for having more components to break and a more complicated and delicate paint finish.

“Complexity is a big thing. It’s not hard to generate a claim on an expensive vehicle,” he said.

“Components like active cruise control, where a car uses a radar sensor behind the grill which keeps a safe distance from the car in front - the minimum for those radar senses is around $2000 and it’s often the first thing that breaks in a crash.”

McDonald stated that luxury vehicles were generally identified as being European and priced above the $60,000 mark. Luxury sedans include the most expensive cars available for road-use. Such units include the $229,500 BMW M5.

“These cars can attract people more interested in performance and can be a bit perkier. That could play a role,” McDonald said.

“I suspect that it’s generally the bump and grind of Sydney traffic that drives a lot of the collisions though.”

While some jobs have been shifted to automation, and others have moved clear overseas, there are still other jobs that have found their way out to the suburbs of the United States, rather than
staying within metropolitan areas.

From 2000 to 2010, the share of jobs near city centers has declined in 91 of 100 of the largest U.S. Metropolitan areas, according to the report from Brookings Institution of Washington,
D.C.. As of 2010, nearly 43% of all jobs were 10 or more miles from the cities' central business districts. That number is considerably higher than the 23% of jobs that are within three miles of the same centers.

The jobs may have been moving only a few miles in some cases, but the overall shift of the massive scale movement can have particular consequences that are not always glaringly obvious at first glance. The move also has environment and public resource impacts.

"Low-density, sprawling development can lead to increased energy consumption, strains on infrastructure, longer commute times, and greater challenges connecting workers to employment," says Elizabeth Kneebone, the report's author and a fellow at Brookings.

There are several factors contributing to the job sprawl. One is the total number of jobs available in the metro areas. Cities have more jobs, and have a greater share of those jobs that lie within
the outer ring. The recession also slowed decentralization, but Kneebone stated that certain cities experienced “hollowing out,” to which city centers lots jobs quickly compared to suburb
rings.

Job decentralization could have an impact that involves long commutes into cities such as New York and D.C., adding to the already long commutes many deal with. Health issues such as
obesity, high blood pressure, and stress are also attached to longer commutes for individuals.

The news in certainly unwelcome to many motorists across the state that is already well established as the highest-paying in the nation. This time, many motorists may be willing to cut the insurance companies a bit of slack, however, as the millions of dollars are being paid out to policyholders whose sedans and SUVs were swept away with the superstorm Sandy disaster.

Still, insurers and the state regulators are stating that the storm is not the primary reason for the raising of rates. The hikes in payment are related to Tropical Storm Irene and the Halloween nor'easter that the the region two years prior. Other factors include higher medical costs, expenses for reinsurance, and a low investment forecast. Experts note that these are the primary contributors, and are even secondary contributors, with superstorm Sandy having living-to-nothing to do with the general hikes.

"Irene is starting to have somewhat of an impact on comprehensive coverage," said Marshall McKnight, spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance, which provided The Record with data on recently approved insurer rate increases.

Allstate, NJ Manufacturers Insurance Co, and State Farm are among those who signed approval for the hikes.

Allstate, who sits as the second-largest in the state, with $958.1 million, is looking for a 6.9% increase. However, the state regulator permitted only a 4.8% hike when all was said and done. The increase already follows a 6.8% and 3% hike in recent years.

The New Jersey Manufacturers Company, which is just behind Allstate at the number three insurer, has $859 million in annual written premiums. The company will now add to rates and renewal policies a 4.9% hike at the start of the summer.

The average cost is now $1,300 in the state, which will rise to $1,364 per year. NJM has reported a $87 million in losses due to superstorm Sandy, and it has been reflected in future price changes. That is likely the worst news for policyholders, that the numbers from Sandy are not even included yet in the overall tally.

The comments made by the CEO followed the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission releasing a latest version of its Airport Monitoring Report. The study noted that the highest parking fees in the entire nation were found at the Sydney Airport. Currently the parking privilege costs $16 per hour and $56 for eight hours.

Melbourne Airport was not too far behind the Sydney Airport, charging $12 per hour and $55 for eight hours.

The revenue collected from the five airports that were investigated by the commission came out to over $340 million over a twelve-month period covering 2011/2012. That tally constituted a
3.7% increase from the twelve months prior.

"With the weakness of the Japanese yen we have to be a lot more competitive because people have choices in the US, have choices across Asia," Mr Joyce said.

"I think the whole experience is very important," he said.

A spokesperson for the Sydney Airport stated that the ACCC report did not create what could be called a fair landscape of the airport's parking options, in regards to what it must charge to maintain.

"Unfortunately, the ACCC report only looks at standard drive-up rates - customers can save up to 73 per cent off parking if they book online," she said.

"For most Sydneysiders, our online offers compare favorably with catching a taxi to and from the airport."

There was a recorded 9.04% growth for the city and surrounding region between the January and December of 2012. That tally gave Pittsburgh the No. 1 spot according to a U-Haul 2012 National Migration Trend Report that used the data collected from regions that held over 5,000
moves per year.

Pittsburgh's total beat out all other notable parts of the nation that meet the criteria. Some areas of note were regions where was Austin Texas with 7.3%, as well as San Francisco with 6.8%.

Fourth place was Reno, Nevada, which entered in at fourth place with 7.15% overall, followed by San Francisco and its total. Jersey City, New Jersey came in at 5.1%, while Raleigh, North Carolina saw a 5.06% increase. Nashville Tennessee was the first sub-5% on the list with 4.28% growth, with Columbus Ohio
trailing with 4.15% overall. Tacoma, Washington rounded out the top-10 with 4.09%.

There was an 18% rise in Ford Sales over the 30-day period, while both Chrysler and GM were able to boast a 11% increase. Those numbers beat forecasts that expected 17%, 10% and 10% respectively for the companies.

Sales were able to have such success across the board for the U.S. Automotive production industry, as Ford had saw its Fusion family car sales assist in its overall positive numbers. The sale rose 24% and topped the Nissan Motor company's Altima, while GM's Cadillac ATS was able to drive a 34% increase for its luxury car line. The Ram 1500 pickup gave Chrysler a boost with a 49% increase.

“Detroit is arguably much more competitive than they have been, from the broad spectrum of their lineup, in a decade or more,” said Jeff Schuster, an analyst with researcher LMC Automotive. “Right now, Detroit has the momentum.”

The main Detroit movers and shakers saw the market share rise just over 46% over the start of 2013. That is an increase from the 44.7% seen a year prior, according to the Autodata Corporations numbers. Japanese manufacturers Toyota, Honda, and Nissan had a combine fall in shares of 31.8%.

“Premiums are higher in no fault states,” said Douglas Pawlowski, an analyst with Fitch Ratings in Chicago. “When you track loss ratios over five years, these 12 states have a higher loss ratio than all the other states. Losses are 12 % higher.”

There are, as of the start of 2013, twelve states that have a no-fault law. They include Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, North Dakota, Pennsylvania and Utah.

“Critics of no fault insurance believe insurers are not adequately charging their more reckless drivers, are under compensating victims of fraudulent accidents and charging honest drivers higher premiums,” Pawlowski said. He noted that the upside of the policy type is that it avoids the time-consuming and costly litigation process. This was considered to be saving everyone involved money, including the state. The reimbursement of insured individuals for injuries helped avoid the risks of uninsured motorists.

Unfortunately, with fraud apparently growing in the states that allow for no-fault insurance, the disadvantages of PIP now seem to outweigh the gains. “Auto insurance is a significant area for us because it takes up a high percentage of the types of fraud we’re seeing occur on the streets,” said Howard Goldblatt, director of government affairs at the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud in Washington, D.C.

Nefarious fraudsters are those individuals who intentionally stage an accident, then feign injury. Some even go as far to ensure they do sustain considerable injury in order to compensate financial gain.

“They target luxury brand cars, such as Lexus and Cadillac, because their drivers tend to have better insurance coverage,” said Lou Beniamino, executive vice president with GlobalOptions Inc. He continued “These con artists load their car with multiple people and claim all the occupants suffered subjective types of back and neck injuries, which are physically hard to disprove.”

The industry average was set at 100, with Harley-Davidson gaining a 111 score, beating out Ducati at 107 and Triumph at 103 scores. There were seven companies that remained above the industry average, while the seven major companies that were below stood anywhere from a score like Suzuki's 99, to KTM's abysmal 73 total.

Harley-Davidson lead all brands through the sales activities, and was most proficient in sales concepts such as encouragement and asking contact information. The helping of customers and assisting them in overcoming possible obstacles to purchase were also noted in the study. Other brands seemed to vary quite significantly from skill to skill.

Ducati provided brochures to nine out of 10 shoppers, while less than half of the Suzuki and Kawasaki shoppers were handed brochures. BMW and Triumph were proficient in allowing demo rides, while Ducati and Yamaha dealerships were much more less likely to offer such services.

This stood as the seventh consecutive year of PP PSI motorcycle benchmarking was held for the industry. Now with seven years of data compiled, companies are gaining a stronger perspective on where they stand in the nationwide numbers that gathers tens of thousand of motorcycle PSI evaluations.
